Missions is essentially a consolidation of insights where you can set it up to receive up-to-date insights once data is refreshed, and share it with your colleagues and stakeholders so that everyone is aligned.

Processes where Missions would be very useful:

  • Weekly Stand Ups - To discuss what's happened in the past week, areas to focus on and work on

  • Monthly Management Meetings - To identify action items and decisions for management to make

  • Ad-hoc Requests - Businesses have specific questions on areas they want insights on

  • Coaching - Specific performance of individuals to be used in 1:1s

To create best-in-class missions, you would typically have an idea of what process you're using the mission for and some idea of measures (Revenue, Number of Clients, Number of Claims, Expenses, etc.) you're focusing on.

Questions to ask yourself when creating a mission:

  • What kind of measures do I need continuous monitoring on/ to validate a hypothesis with? i.e. I need to monitor my team's performance to find coaching opportunities, There has been a decline in sales for a specific product - what's happening there, etc.

  • Is there a reporting cadence I need set up my missions on? i.e. I have a weekly meeting with my team, I have a monthly management review to prepare in advance, etc.

  • Who are my target audience for this mission? i.e. it's only for me to monitor any outliers/anomalies, it's for my stakeholders for their weekly meetings, monthly presentations, etc.


Take for example, I want to understand how my team's performance is each week.

I'll start by naming my mission (report) as "Superstar Team's Weekly Insights" and select the dataset and first key measure (i.e Revenue) you want to analyse. We will be including other key measures eventually and in the steps below I'll show you a tip on how to reduce effort/time with this task.


Upon creating a mission, you will land on the summary page. This page is automatically created and gives an overview of all the pages within a single mission.

As you build your mission pages, more tiles will appear in the summary page.

When you set a subscription schedule, Auto Insights will send this summary page to your email and the emails that you've indicated in the schedule. Click here to learn how to set a schedule.


Each page has a query bar that provides the focus of analysis for that specific page. Essentially, we would be interacting with this query bar to get Auto Insights to search for insights on a specific area,.

Some questions to ask while interacting with the query bar:

  • Do I want Auto Insights to tell me where to focus?

    • I'm not sure which segment I should breakdown by, things always change each month

If this is what you need each month, let Auto Insights do the work and identify the largest contributing factors that cause the change.

You should leave the filters and breakdowns blank in this scenario. This way, Auto Insights will calculate the largest contributing factors and display them in descending order.


  • I know that I need to focus on a specific area

    • I need to only look at my team's performance, I'm not interested in other teams

    • I need to only focus on my product, I'm not interested in other products

In this scenario, you should add filters to your query e.g. Team 6.


  • I know that I want to compare across a segment (i.e. dimension)

    • I need to understand movement across all teams

    • I need to know how my product is performing against other products

In this scenario, you should add breakdowns to your query e.g. Teams

Totals vs Change:

Whenever we interact with data, there are 2 main types of analysis that we want to uncover, namely understanding the changes compared to previous period, and understanding within that period, what's contributing to the numbers.

Selecting the Total box and Auto Insights will focus on just proportion and disregard insights related to change over time.

You can further customise this type of insights by removing the time comparison period or select "All time"

Selecting the Change box, Auto Insights will focus on explaining the changes that happened.

Changing the time comparison period:

You're able to change the time period comparison, add filters or breakdowns to curate Auto Insights' analysis further.

You can change the comparison period to compare against the previous month or same month last year. Refer to this article on Time Period comparison for details.


There are 3 ways you can add a page within Mission:

FIRST OPTION: Within Mission's edit mode, click on the '+' sign on the left panel. This will allow you to create a new page from scratch.

SECOND OPTION: Within MIssion's edit mode, click on the 3 dots '...' on the left panel of an existing page, select ‘Duplicate Page’ and the duplicated page will appear below.

Tip: Use this method when you want to keep the existing filters and breakdown from the 1st page in subsequent pages (only works when the dataset remains the same). This saves you time and reduces effort on repetitive tasks!

THIRD OPTION: If you see a page in Search or in someone's mission that you would like to add to your own mission, click on '+Add Page to Mission" and select a new mission or an existing one.


Click ‘Present’ to bring you back to presentation view instead of Edit mode.


Additional features that you can do within a Mission

Update the title / add commentary per page

You can update the title and add a commentary on each page of the mission by clicking on ‘Edit Introduction’ and type in your preferred title for the page and any additional commentary to explain or highlight certain context for the viewer.

Re-order pages

To reorder the pages, select the page that you would like to reorder, click drag the page to the position you would like to shift it to.

Hide insights that don’t matter

You can remove any story card/section within the page you would like to hide from presentation view by clicking on the eye icon to toggle it off.

Delete a page

You can delete an existing page by hovering over the page you wish to delete, and click on the down arrow icon and select ‘Delete Page’. Take note that a page deletion is irreversible.
